22 donate hair to aid cancer victims

RANGELY I Twenty-two donors ages 6 to 43 donated a combined 247 inches of hair at the Pantene Beautiful Lengths ponytail cutting event on March 20 on the Colorado Northwestern Community College (CNCC) campus in Rangely.
CNCC LeaderTrek students and 2013-2014’s Miss Colorado Teen and The Pageant U.S. National Teen Alyssa Magalong, a CNCC sophomore, hosted the drive, with CNCC-Craig cosmetology students cutting six blond, one gray/black, and 15 brunette ponytails. Among the participants was one male donor.
“For those donating their hair for the first time, they were nervous in the beginning,” Magalong said. “Those who had done it before weren’t so much. Afterward, you could see everyone really light up because they knew it was going for a great cause.”
Magalong said that most cosmetology students had never cut anyone’s hair as a donation.
“They said they want to do the (Pantene ponytail cutting) or something similar in Craig next year,” she said. “I thought that was really awesome that this spans beyond Rangely.”
Since its inception in 2006, the Beautiful Lengths program, a partnership between Pantene and the American Cancer Society, has contributed 24,000 real-hair wigs to women who have lost their hair to cancer treatments.
