MEEKER I It wasn’t all music at the 2015 Spring Concert held May 20 at the Meeker High School auditorium on May 20 as 24 members of the student body were also inducted into the National Honor Society.

The National Honor Society was established in 1921, and the Meeker High School charter goes back to 1959 as the Scholastia Chapter. The organization was established by high school principals concerned in 1919 about a growing movement to emphasize athletic endeavors and limit academic activities. They wanted an organization to recognize the well-rounded student.
In 1921, they formed the National Honor Society, whose objectives were to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership and to encourage the development of character.
Meeker’s inductees have fulfilled the qualifications as outlined in the group constitution and student handbook, which include at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average after three semesters, school and community activities, service and citizenship.
The emblem of the society is the keystone and the torch.
The torch and the lit candles at the ceremony represent the eternal light of truth. The keystone is the piece at the crown of an arch to hold all others in place.
The keystone bears at its base, the letters C, S, L and S which stand for the four principles of the organization: Character, Scholarship, Leadership and Service.
Each year, members are re-evaluated to maintain their membership. Letters of warning or probation can be issued for noncompliance with these principles.
The new members were inducted by charter President Brittany Smith, Vice President Reagan Pearce, Paige Dowker, an NHS representative to the MHS Student Council, Dominique Devore, an NHS representative to the MHS Student Council; language arts instructor and NHS advisor Kathleen Kelley, and she was assisted by fellow language arts teacher Cheri Robinson.
The 2015 inductees into the Scholastia Chapter of the National Honor Society at Meeker High School are:
Seniors: Joseph Newman, Raul Lopez, Lilian Munn, Sara Murray, Paige Jones and Austin Purcell.
Juniors: Paula Montano and Matt Devore.
Sophomores: Madeline Amack, Cole Brown, Sheridan Harvey, Lori Klinglesmith, Delenn Mobley, Kendra Nelson, Meghan Smith, Casey Turner, Maggie Phelan, Julia Eskelson, Nishiko Thelan, Chase Rule, Kinzy Burke, Reese Pertile, Faith Goedert and Peyton Burke.
