Rio Blanco County Days Gone By

The Meeker Herald — 125 years ago
– Dick Carnrike has sold his place on Nine Mile Hill and will leave for California.
– Bert and Mrs. Salter will leave for the Pacific coast tomorrow to spend the remainder of the winter.
– Frank Sheridan topped the Kansas City market last week. The Harp-Peterson and L.F. Vancleave fared very well.
– Mrs. E.O. Lloyd and son leave tomorrow for Los Angeles to remain for three or four months. Mr. Lloyd may join the wife and boy later and enjoy California’s warm clime for a spell.
– Matt Maloney mingled with his town friends Monday.
– Bert and Vila Show in Musical Vaudeville will appear at the Rooney Hall, Dec. 16, 1912. The funniest show on the road. Irish, Dutch and Blackface specialities. A social dance after the show. Admission, 25¢ and 50¢; dance 50¢. Come out and enjoy a good laugh. Bert and Viola String Band for the dance music. Show stats at 8:15 p.m.
– White River weather all week — cold nights and sunshiny days.
– Mr. and Mrs. B.C. Howey and Mr. J.F. Wilson, of Flag Creek, were town visitors Wednesday.
– Mrs. D.L. Rusk, from Palisade, has taken a position in the dry goods department at Hugus’. Mrs. Rusk is experienced in this department.
– M.J. and Mrs. Hayes departed Wednesday for the East. A visit will made with Illinois relatives; and to relatives in the New England sates. After the holidays, Mr. and Mrs. Hayes will cross the Atlantic and late winter and spring months will be spent in the British Isles. Good luck.
– When in need of anything in the Sheet Iron line. Go to A.E. Lytle’s. He will treat you right.
– Best place to stop in Meeker is the Miller House. Meals, 35¢.

The Meeker Herald — 50 years ago
– The board of directors of the Meeker Chamber of Commerce met Friday of last week. The new board members elected for two-year terms were. W.G. “Dub” Miller, Ernest Marietta, John Irwin and Bill Miller. The board then proceeded to elect its officers to serve the coming year from members of the board of directors. Mr. Dub Miller was re-elected president.
– Mrs. Reta Clark left last weekend for Pueblo where she spent a few days visiting relatives and friends.
– Kenneth Balcolmb, former Meeker lawyer, has been elected president of the Glenwood Springs golf club for the coming year.
– Mr. ad Mrs. George Moyer were over last weekend visiting their son and daughter and other Meeker friends and while here took in the Little Beaver turkey shoot Sunday.
– Mr. Paul Starbuck returned home Sunday from Fort Collins with his FFA boys who entered the state judging contest. Jimmy Whalin received an excellent in beef judging; Scott Wigington received a superior in dairy cattle judging and Lynn Barney received superior in soldering and glazing; and excellent in electricity. The group came home by way of Laramie and Walden and the roads were dry all the way.
– A fire leveled the house owned by John Fetcher last Wednesday morning. It is believed the the fire started in the chimney.

The Meeker Herald — 25 years ago
– It was just a regular Saturday morning for Circle K employee Kathy Ewing as she sat behind the counter doing her bookkeeping chores. It was also probably a normal morning for William Jenkins of Meeker as he drove his car down to the convenience store to pick up Sunday’s paper. After 8:55 a.m., however, nothing was normal again for the two as Jenkins was unable to find the brake to his car and smashed through the front doors and glass plates of the building, causing a estimated $7,000 to $8,000 worth of damage.
– Annie and Prescott Merriam, second graders at Meeker Elementary School and avid fox hunters, gave a good account of themselves in a “Today Show” interview. The Today Show was a filming a 5- to 10-minute spot on fox hunting at Strang Ranch, Carbondale.
– The friends of Mason and Ethel Stout are invited to an open house on the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary.
– Dave, Jan and Chad Henderson, Tom, Sherry, Eddie, Andy and Amanda Rubin, accompanied by Nettie Modlin, traveled to Colorado Springs Wednesday. In Colorado Springs they enjoyed watching a University of Colorado Springs basketball game in which Kirk Henderson played.
– It’s a first grandchild for Joanne and Melvin Barley and the first grandson for Jim and Leota Cook, all of Meeker. Lisa and Mike Cook are the happy and proud parents of their firstborn, Michael Zachary, born Dec. 3.
– Doug and Debra Overton are the proud parents of a new son, Jeffry Kyle, born Dec. 3.
– Mr. and Mrs. John Barney drove to Sheridan, Wyo., to spend a four-day Thanksgiving holiday with their son and family, Mr. and Mrs. Shane Barney and girls.
– While the MHS wrestling team was unable to defend the title they won at Steamboat last year, they did crown four champions as sophomore J.C. Watt won at 126; Coley Turner topped the field at 138; returning state champ Lenny Klinglesmith was unbeaten at 155; while heavyweight Matt Jensen bested the rest of the field at that weight.

Rangely Times — 50 years ago
– Two separate bands of sheep were involved in accidents on Nov. 29 on Colorado Hwy. 64 between Rangely and Meeker.
– Staff Sgt. Fred Ong, son of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Ong has been awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal for distinctive service in Vietnam.
– A fatal dose of urea in a breeder’s cube feed has now been determined as the cause for the death of 27 of B.R. (Port) Franklin’s registered Herefords.
– The First Southern Baptist Church was the scene of the wedding which united Miss Priscilla Ann Wells, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Orville Wells of Rangely and Clarence C. Hamilton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Russell Hamilton, also of Rangely.
– The Panther wrestling team walloped Roosevelt, Utah, 35-15 at its home debut last weekend but fell to Meeker 34-16.The JV squad won both duals 28-19 over Meeker and 45-0 against Roosevelt.
– The Jr. High Panthers traveled to Dinosaur this past week and defeated a hustling and much improved quintet from the neighboring town.
– Rangely’s young Panthers downed the Ashley Valley Panthers Saturday 42-20. This is the first time that Rangely has defeated Ashley in basketball and the win came on Vernal’s home court.
– Lloyd Christensen of Rangely was elected chairman of the Yampa-White River Watershed Association at the annual meeting Dec. 4.

Rangely Times — 30 years ago
– Booster in Eastern Utah and Western Colorado are gearing up for a fight over which state will get a proposed 800 megawatt coal-fired power plant.
– CNCC, with the assistance of the Rangely Community Development Cooperative, has filed with the Federal Communications Commission for a non-commercial educational FM broadcast station.
– The Rangely Area Leisure Time Council would like to take the opportunity to invite you to visit the Rangely Public Library within the next few months and view the Artist in Residence’s Art Show.
– Staff Sergeant Ronald L. Brenton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dean P. Brenton of Rangely, has arrived for duty at Elmendorf AFB, Alaska. Sergeant Brenton, a flight engineer with a unit of the Military Airlift Command, previously served at Dyess AFB, Texas.
– Mr. and Mrs. Frank E. Wilson announce the birth of a son, Chadd Christian.
– Two RHS football players were recently selected to the NWL All-Conference first team. Jim Pacheco was chosen as offensive fullback and Casey Klements defensive back. Pacheco was also runner-up in the voting for the NWL Back of the Year. Making the All-League Honorable Mention Team from Rangely was Bryon Byers at defensive back, Mike Hayes at defensive end and Calvin Hazlewood at center.
– Miss Beth Conroy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dan Conroy, was sleeted as Student of the Month for October by the Rangely Elks Lodge #1907. Beth, 18, is a senior at RHS.
– Michael Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Smith of Rangely will receive a bachelor’s degree from Colorado State University at Fort Collins at the completion of fall semester.

Rangely Times — 20 years ago
– In 1987, the town was particularly hard hit by the decline in economic activity in town due to the drop in oil prices. The town is much more dependent on income from sales taxes than income from property taxes.
– A Rangely man became the fifth person in the “Cash Package” game to win a free “direct” spin of the Colorado Lottery’s grand prize wheel. Clifford Speck, 61, purchased 10 “Cash Package” Lottery tickets at Ace High in Rangely. According to Speck, the winning spin ticket was the second to the last one. He is guaranteed to win at least $1,000.
– Troy Wilson of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., will be spending the Christmas holidays with his parents, Doug and Patty Wilson.
– The Rangely Middle School seventh grade basketball team had a profitable weekend as they won games on Friday against Hayden and Saturday against Steamboat Springs.
– Delta State University, Cleveland, Miss., wrapped up the 1987 portion of its men’s and women’s swimming and diving schedules. In the men’s events, Leslie Pratt, formerly of Rangely, placed fourth in the 100 Free event.
– Dale Howard, board member for the Western Rio Blanco Metropolitan Recreation and Park District, resigned his seat on the board last night. Dale is heading to Bowling Green, Ohio, to pursue a Ph.D.
– On Friday, Dec. 11, the RHS Panther wrestling team went to Palisade. The team placed third overall and got the sportsmanship award. Roger Rowley placed third, Bill Lee placed first, Dusti Rose placed fourth, Jamie Lambert placed third, Corky Powell took second, Scott Dellinger placed first, Brett Powell placed first and Lewis Graham placed first.
– Carmen Hidalgo Rivas and Sabrina Murry received awards for excellence at the Roaring Fork Speech meet at Glenwood Springs Saturday, Dec. 12.
– A total of 36 students from this area have been included in the 21st annual edition of “WHO’S Who Among American High School Students,” 1986-1987. Area students selected for this year’s volume from Rangely High School are: Chad Brady, Brenda Brenton, Kelli Collins, Cindy Conkle, Rusty Conrad, Monica Correll, Andrew Crookston, Tom Dagnan, Jerry Dalrymple, Curtina Davis, Phoebe Day, Tom Galloway, Kim Hamilton, Nikki Hanson, Jason Hoyt, shane McCuistion, Sabrina Murry, Laura Norlin, Brian Palmer, Michelle Palmer, Kay Patterson, Rodger Polley, Amorette Riebold, Shawnee Tomlinson and Jackie Wysocki.

  • Mormon crickets have hatched near Rangely. They were all sighted on BLM land north of Hwy. 64 near the junction of CR 96 and CR 1, down a dirt road near the Moffat County line.  The picture shown was taken yesterday by Mary Meinen from Rangely. She says the crickets are about the size of a ladybug (less than 1/2”). Some of them are actually yellow in color but most of them are darker. They are milling around and getting ready to start moving soon. Note: Photo is not to scale.
Rio Blanco County and the White River and Douglas Creek Conservation Districts are still asking for your help to identify additional hatch-outs of crickets so that control efforts can be put in place. The success of the program will highly depend upon local landowners and the public helping to locate crickets as soon as they hatch.
