MEEKER I A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Or stamp, as the case is for the Blazin’ Trails Around the World for Wellness program. The community-wide health movement kicks off this month, just in time for those New Year’s resolutions you may or may not have made (and may or may not be keeping.)

Blazin’ Trails runs in six month cycles and promotes preventative care, helps incorporate fitness opportunities and fosters improved nutrition and healthier overall choices through education and real-world tools. The program is funded by a grant from the Meeker Human Resource Council and XTO Energy and made possible by a partnership between Pioneers Healthcare Foundation, Pioneers Medical Center (PMC) and the ERBM Recreation and Park District. Meeker residents gain access to resources for a sustainable healthy lifestyle through monthly workshops on a variety of health topics. Bonus— there are prizes! And it’s free!
It works like this: after signing up at Pioneer’s Medical Center or the Meeker Recreation Center, you will receive a “passport.” (Passport pages can also be obtained at www.pioneershospital.org/wp-content/uploads/ 2013/01/BlazinTrails_Passport_StampPage.pdf.)
Each time you complete a Blazin’ Trails activity, you’ll earn passport stamps. These stamps can then be redeemed for prizes. If you collect 100 stamps you can enter a drawing for a trip to Moab, Utah, or a GoPro™, or a rafting trip.
Stamps can be earned several ways. The first way is through participation in Pioneer’s Medical Center’s Trails to Health, a program that allows you to receive discounted annual physicals, blood work, fitness testing, screenings and resources for chronic disease management (e.g. diabetes and high blood pressure), as well as a one-on-one partnership with a healthcare professional to create a customized plan for improved personal health. The program is covered by most insurance plans. For more information about Trails to Health, call 970-878-4014 or visit www.pioneershospital.org/community/community-service/trails-to-health.
Another way to earn stamps is by participating in fitness classes or completing workouts at Meeker Recreation Center.
“We support the Blazin’ Trails program and will continue to work with Pioneers Medical Center to support and enhance the program,” said Shelly Rogers, interim recreation manager.
ERBM Recreation and Park District offers a wide variety of classes for every fitness level, including pool workouts, pilates, tai chi, yoga, cardio, resistance training, and Zumba (R). For a fitness schedule, visit: www.meekerrecdistrict.com/Assets/ERBM+District+Digital+Assets/Jan.Feb+2015+Line-up.pdf
The Meeker Recreation Center membership blitz is taking place right now, which means you can obtain a membership for half the usual cost. The blitz ends tomorrow, Jan. 16, at 8:30 p.m. Unlimited use of the fitness room and pool during business hours as well as fee reductions on select programs and classes are included. For memberships, call 970-878-3403.
One last way to collect stamps is to use the FREE blood pressure kiosk located at Meeker Drugs, 315 Sixth St.
Every stamp in every participant’s booklet counts as two miles. The community goal is to collectively obtain 12,000 stamps for 24,000 miles—the equivalent of a journey around the world.
Find your path to health this year. Join the movement. Create—and sustain—better life habits in 2015 and beyond.
Blazin’ Trails is your personalized journey to wellness—one stamp at a time.
