MEEKER I The Meeker High School girls’ basketball team defeated Hayden 64-44 on Feb. 5, but then lost by 25 in Paonia on Friday.
Meeker hosted Rangely on Tuesday and will play Vail Christian in Vail today, then host Caprock Academy on Friday.
Meeker took control early against Hayden and never looked back. However, the squad fell behind early against Paonia and never got back into the game.
Meeker led 19-6 after the first period against Hayden, then scored 19 more in the second quarter to lead 38-16 at halftime.
The lady Cowboys scored 15 more in the third quarter, and although they were outscored by five in the final quarter, it was too little, too late for the Tigers from Hayden.
Senior Sydney Hughes led the girls with 24 points, five rebounds and 11 steals. Reese Pertile scored 10 and pulled down seven rebounds, Megan Parker added nine and freshman Maggie Phelan scored eight. Jenna Walsh scored six against the Tigers, while Madi Shults, Halle Ahrens and Anna Walsh each had two while Peyton Burke added a free throw.
Against the Eagles in Paonia, the Meeker girls’ squad trailed by eight at the end of the first quarter and by 11 at halftime.
Meeker only scored 10 points in the second half, and six of those were in the third quarter, ultimately losing the game by a 57-32 margin.
Parker led Meeker with 12 points and Hughes finished with 10. Jenna Walsh scored three while Shults, Pertile and Phelan each added a basket while Anna Walsh made one free throw in the loss.
Meeker will play in Vail against Vail Christian tonight, then host Caprock Academy on Friday
