MEEKER I The Meeker A.A.U. basketball teams have been very busy the past couple of weekends.
The three teams, a sixth-grade boys’ team, a sixth-grade girls’ team and a combination seventh- and eighth-grade girls’ team have been practicing since the first of March, and they competed in the Glenwood Springs tournament on March 21-23, then in Rifle on Friday and Saturday.
The teams will wrap up their season tonight with games against Rangely and Rifle at Meeker High School and Barone Middle School.
The sixth-grade boys have competed very well, keeping games close and winning a pair of games handily. The seventh- and eighth-grade girls have played up all season, competing against several all-star eighth grade teams from Grand Junction, Fruita and around the area.
The girls have played eight games and won half of them with a chance at two more tonight.
The sixth-grade girls’ team has played nine games, four with only five girls. They won five of their games and finished second in the tournament in Rifle.
The teams have practiced together, enjoying the challenge of playing each other, and appreciating the camaraderie the experience has provided. All the participants have worked very hard and the short, fun season has seen great growth from the athletes.
