Annual tourney draws 14 teams

RANGELY I The Cedar Ridges Ladies Golf Club hosted its annual tournament June 13, with 14 teams participating in the three-lady scramble.
In the format, each lady tees off and then selects which ball gives them the best chance to get to the green. They each hit from that spot and then repeat the process until they hole the ball out.
Rangely ladies provided treats at each hole, starting with a golf towel from Baker Hughes Centrilift at the clubhouse.
As they play the round, they add water, snacks, toothbrushes, lotion and tissue, to name a few of the goodies.
Each player also chooses a door prize, provided by the local members, before they start play, so no one goes home empty handed.
Divided into two flights, the ladies headed out to their designated tee boxes and the games began. Mother Nature did her part, providing lots of sunshine and holding off on all the recent rain.
On each hole, the ladies have a contest within the tournament to test their skills, or sometimes just plain luck.
Hole No. 1 had a longest drive from the red tee box and was the only contest divided by flights.
Winning the A Flight was Amber Nicholson. while Candra (C.J.) Wilson crunched her drive in the B Flight.
Closest to the pin on the second shot for hole No. 2 was Rangely’s Grace Huitt. Nondis Lowther from Rifle won the hole No. 3 contest, landing her drive nearest the 150 yard marker in the middle of the fairway.
Hole No. 4 was closest to the pin on the drive, from either tee box, and Linda Gordon had the nearest shot.
Sinking the longest putt on the No. 5 green was Ann Brady.
The sixth hole prize winner was Cori Elam, who put her ball closest to the pin on her second shot.
Meeker’s Patty Edwards hit her drive closest to the pin on No. 7. Not everyone wants to claim the shortest drive on hole No. 8, but at least you don’t go home empty handed.
Congrats to Merrie Byers. Longest putt was the final test on hole No. 9 and Jo Cornett from Rifle sank her putt for the honors.
It was a battle in the A Flight with the threesome of Ellen Boudreaux, Teresa Broderick and Linda Gordon going up against last year’s defending champs: Amber, Susan and Heather Nicholson from Craig.
Rangely’s team won first gross with a 7-under par round of 65, with the Nicholson team claiming second gross, just three strokes behind.
Winning first net were Nondis Lowther, Marge Fleming and Jo Cornett. Out-of-towners Susan Schmit-Farmer, Lynn Kern and Patty Edwards took the second net prize.
In the B Flight, another Rangely team, consisting of Leilanie Morgan, Ann Brady and Grace Huitt took first gross with a fine score of 73.
JoAnn Cowan, Nicole Begay and Barb Thorne of Vernal, Utah, won second gross. Cori Elam, Trilby Elam and C.J. Wilson had the top net score and a Utah team claimed second net.
The Roosevelt team consisted of Jessica Jenkins, Lynda Hagman and Calla Freston.
Following lunch, Karen Elsea from Battlement Mesa won the drawing for a beautiful afghan, knitted by Taylor Byers just for the tournament participants.
The guys could get in on one of the door prize drawings as well, and this year’s winner was Ron Rasmussen.
Of course, the Cedar Ridges Three Lady Scramble would not be possible without the support of area businesses and individuals. Donations and hole prizes were provided by Ace Hi Club, Alliance Energy, Betty’s Cafe, Big D’s Pumping, Blu H Well Service, Blue Mountain Inn and Suites, Colorado CPA Services, Ducey’s Electric, First National Bank of the Rockies, Hejl Consulting, Kevin Amack Insurance Agency, Moon Lake Electric Association, Pinyon Tree Liquors, Pioneer Natural Resources, Quality Carpet and Furnishings, Rangely Trash Service, Stewart Welding and Machine, Sweetbriar Gifts, W.C. Striegel, and Urie Trucking as well as the Cedar Ridges Ladies.
The ladies commented what great shape the course was in and thanks goes to Bernie Shafer and his crew for doing a wonderful job.
Chris Hejl and the employees at the clubhouse are also greatly appreciated for all the help making this year’s tournament a success.
