Aspen meet tough for MHS cross country; race today in Rifle

MEEKER | Meeker cross country made the trip to Aspen on Saturday for the Chris Severy Invitational.
“I feel that the Aspen course is what cross country should be in Colorado—good hill running, great scenery, and a bit of a lack of oxygen!” said coach Marty Casey. The boys’ JV race had the first representation for the Cowboys. Josh Day was the first Cowboy to the finish, running the difficult course in 30:40. Josh Dinwiddie crossed the line next for Meeker, in 32:21, and Zach Harman was Meeker’s third JV runner this week, finishing in 33:48.
Briar Meszaros was next to run, and finished the girls’ varsity race in 27:28, for 20th place. Varsity boys raced next, and Matthew Beck had a solid showing, at 21:11, and ninth place. Pake Burke was Meeker’s second to the finish, 24th place at 23:03, nearly three minutes faster than his time at Aspen last year. Ashdon Seibert and Greg Jones had their first looks at the Aspen course, and finished in 26:23 and 27:18, for 40th and 43rd places. Christopher Strate was the fifth Cowboy in, at 30:46 for 45th place.
“I saw some really good running from the team this week. I never expect any PR’s in Aspen, but we had some great races, and this is the type of course that helps with the mental side of racing,” said coach Casey.
Meeker will be at the Rifle Creek Golf Course today, with races starting at 4:40 p.m.
