MEEKER I After the first day of play, George and Peggy Back were tied with Ellen Boudreaux and son Ron Kelly Crawford with the best gross score in the championship flight of the annual couples tournament. Although both teams added strokes on the second day, they both finished well.
Eleven teams played in the championship flight and 12 teams made up the field in the second flight of the two-day, 36-hole event played Saturday and Sunday last at the Meeker Golf Course.
Jimmy and Dorlene Roy of Glenwood Springs shot a five-over par 73 after the first 18 holes, one shot behind the Backs and Boudreaux’s team and shot the same score the second day to win the tournament by one stroke. Boudreaux and Crawford shot a 75 Sunday and finished second with a gross score of 147.
The Backs added 13 shots to their first day total but still finished with the best net score (115) of the tournament. Mark and Carla Fergen of Rifle had a better gross score (156) than the Backs by one shot but finished behind them when the net scores were figured. The two teams finished in the same order last year.
Lee and Linda Hansen from Wyoming shot 80 both days and won the second flight with the best gross score. Meeker’s Rod Crawford and Patty Edwards and Les and Susie Sprod trailed the Hansens by one shot after the first day but couldn’t keep the pace on the second round. Crawford and Edwards finished eight shots behind the leaders for the second best gross score while Jeff Nielson and Judy Elliot of Steamboat Springs finished with the best net score (117). Dave Jones and Linda Ditsworth of Englewood finished with the second best net score, three shots back.
The United Way scramble will be played this weekend in Meeker.
