MEEKER I After a second-place finish in the 2A Colorado State Wrestling Championships in Denver, Meeker coaches J.C. Watt and Willy Theos were back in the wrestling room, preparing 20 Barone Middle School kids for their first tournament, held in Gypsum on Saturday.
“We have a real inexperienced team, so we should improve every week,” coach Watt said. “They are a lot of fun.”
The young Cowboys did not crown any champions, but six made it into the consolation championship match in their respective weights and half of them finished as consolation champs.
Trapper McGruder (85), Tevin Pelloni (115) and Eli Hanks (170) all won four matches and lost one on their way to bronze medals.
Codey Follman won five matches and lost one to finish fourth in the 105-pound bracket. Gabe Gonzalez (150) and Charles Curry (100) both won two matches and finished fourth in their respective weights.
Luis Villalpando (125), Kesston Hobbs and Jake Shelton each won two matches but didn’t place. Nick Massey (85), Tanner Ridgeway (100), Brennan Ibach, Trentin Moomey (120), James Amick (135), Jared Henderson (155) and Colby Shelton (275) all wrestled but did not place.
Barone Middle School wrestlers competed in Craig on Tuesday and will participate in a tournament in Steamboat Springs on Saturday.
