MEEKER I Three Barone Middle School wrestlers advanced to the championship match in a tournament held in Oak Creek on Saturday, and two seventh-graders won titles in their respective weights.
The young Cowboys will host the season-ending tournament on Saturday at Meeker High School.
Seventh graders Tevin Pelloni (115) and Ridge Williams (165) each won individual titles, and eighth-grader James Amick finished second at 135.
“It was good to see them wrestle well,” head coach J.C. Watt said.
The Cowboys finished sixth as a team and three other wrestlers placed in the top four in the Soroco tournament.
Codey Follman placed third in the 105-pound bracket while teammates Kale Burke (105) and Jake Shelton (135) placed fourth.
Gabe Gonzalez won two matches in the 145-pound bracket but did not place. Phil Arnold (85), Trapper McGruder, (90), Luis Villalpando (125), Kesston Hobbs (130), Jared Henderson (155) all won a match in their respective weights and Colby Shelton lost two matches, including a 1-0 decision in the heavyweight division.
Twelve teams, including the Cowboys, will wrestle in Meeker on Saturday.
“It’s a big tournament,” Coach Watt said. “We’ll get to see some new competition, as Rifle, Grand Valley and Basalt will be here.”
