MEEKER I The Barone Middle School track team of 61 strong has been exciting to watch in their first two meets. There has been one record broken and two relays were within a second of the school record.
In the first meet of the season, hosted by Rangely, the Meeker kids won three out of four divisions and had outstanding performances from all the relays. Coached again by Debbie Cook, Jake Boesch ran an incredible 800 to beat the record held by Pat Love. Anthony Watt won the 100 dash and was a member of the 800 relay that also broke a record held by this year’s senior boys. His team included Austin Purcell, Tristan Pelloni and Jake Phelan. There were many kids close to school records with their efforts. Piper Haney ran a strong 800 to put her within 10 seconds of the record going into the rest of the season, the seventh-grade boys’ and girls’ 400 relay teams, along with the eighth-grade boy’ team and several jumpers look to be closing in by the end of season.
Craig Middle School hosted the second meet, where seven teams competed and the Meeker eighth-grade girls and seventh-grade boys placed first, and the eighth-grade boys and seventh-grade girls finished second. The kids were unbeaten in the 400 relay and were 13 for 16 in all relays for the day. Jake Phelan won the triple and long jump for the seventh-grade boys and Aly Ridings, Anna Ducey, and Piper Haney all placed high in the jumping events for the eighth-grade girls. Miranda Meryle was second in the long jump for the seventh-grade girls and along with teammates Sydney Hughes, Reagan Pearce and Brittany Smith made up the unbeaten 400 relay team. Dylan Mobley and Zane Pfau both finished second in the mile run for the boys’ divisions and Jake Boesch won the 800 with Cody McLaughlin, Caleb Lange and Bailey Mantle rounding out the top six kids in the same event.
The throwers were well represented by Kevin Eli, Ohana Matalia, Jordan Smith, Dylan Mobley, Brittany Smith, Alexis Lawrence all placing in the shot put and discus.
The majority of kids improved on their personal records and look forward to competing this Saturday at our home meet. With so many kids, it is impossible to mention all of the events and ribbon winners. BMS will host its track meet Saturday, with the field events starting at 9 a.m. and the running events beginning at 10 a.m.
