Basketball players earn league and state recognition

MEEKER I The Meeker High School basketball teams have officially wrapped up their seasons. As they held their awards banquets last week, both the Meeker boys and girls had plenty to celebrate.
Not only did both teams qualify for the 2014 Colorado State Basketball Championships, the girls finished third. To top off the success, five girls were recognized for their play.
Taylor Neilson was named the Western Slope co-player of the year and she was selected to the Colorado Coaches of Girls Sports all-state team. She played in that game at the end of March. Neilson was also named to the prestigious Colorado High School Coaches Association all-state game that will be played this summer and she also made the Colorado Preps second team all-state, as well as the 2A Denver Post all-state honorable mention.
Along with Neilson, Sydney Hughes was named to the 2A Denver Post all-state second team. She was also a first team all-conference selection.
Meeker dominated the all-conference first team as Aly Ridings and Piper Haney were also selected. Deena Norell was named all-conference honorable mention.
Not only did the five starters for the Meeker team get recognized, their coach, Greg Chintala, was nominated to coach in the Colorado High School Coaches Association all-state game. The success of the season was clearly a team effort, a combination of outstanding individual effort and play.
The Meeker boys’ basketball team also had the Western Slope League player of the year in Jeremy Musgrave. Joining him on the all-conference team were teammates Dylan Mobley and Raul Lopez.
The leadership and level of play did not go unnoticed for the Cowboys, and the awards were well deserved.
It is not often the boys and girls player of the year come from the same town. Congratulations to Jeremy, Taylor and all the award winners.
