MEEKER | This past Saturday there were 27 participants at the Meeker Sportsmans’ Club’s annual Jim Harmon Black Powder/Blanket Shoot event held at the Meeker shooting range south of town on Highway 13.
This shoot was open to the public with contestants traveling from as far away as Aurora.
Fun and challenging targets ranged from a small metal buffalo, to apples hanging on strings, all the way down to cherry tomatoes on toothpicks.
Events included a 20 shot trail-walk, six shot pistol course, speed shoot, and a knife and tomahawk throw.
Prize winners in the rifle competition were Matt Monger (Meeker) and Sally Lippoldt (Grand Junction).
Pistol shoot winners were Brent Rowles (Meeker) and Sally Lippoldt.
Brent Rowles and his brother Bernie (Fruita) were the winning team in the speed-shoot with Matt Monger and Chris Reidinger coming in a close second, and Carol Rowles (Meeker) and Sally Lippoldt close behind.
Other top shooters included Bob Mosher (Collbran), Heather Werth (Aurora) and John Taylor (Meeker).
Shooters chose their prize from the variety contributed. For earning the highest score of the day, Matt Monger was awarded a scrimshaw powder horn made and donated by Bernie Roybal. All participants received door prizes.
The day was full of fun, shared laughter and the smell of black powder.
