MEEKER I The Bureau of Land Management led local kids ages 9 to 11 from the East Rio Blanco Meeker Recreation Center on a service-oriented adventure May 14 to teach kids stewardship.
Many local cooperators recently came together with projects to improve trail systems around Philip and Dorcas Jensen Memorial Park and China Wall. Improvements on the trail system continue, so those on the hike placed a permanent trail register that will allow guests to record their experience along the trail.
Aaron Grimes of the BLM White River Field Office led the trip, spending time along the way discussing plants, animals and ecology. Grimes said the kids had a great time on their adventure. He said that educating youth about the importance of stewardship sets the stage for future responsible users.
“The importance of the hikes cannot be overstated,” said Katherine Sharp-Wallace, ERBM’s recreation manager. “They allow our youth to experience the beautiful White River Valley and surrounding area, as well as encourage healthy lifestyles through activities other than traditional sports. We are extremely grateful to have the opportunity to partner with the Bureau of Land Management’s White River Field Office.
“It is our hope that this partnership will help inspire our youth to appreciate and respect our public lands and open spaces, as well as encourage increased outdoor activity,” she said.
The hike was part of a youth program with the Eastern Rio Blanco, Meeker Recreation District. ERBM has several hiking adventures throughout the summer for children entering fifth through 12th grades.
