RANGELY — The Bureau of Land Management’s White River Field Office is set to begin a 300-acre prescribed burn 10 miles east of Rangely, Colo., soon.
The burn, south of Highway 64 in Lower Fletcher Gulch, was scheduled to begin Wednesday if weather is favorable. It will take two to three days to complete. Smoke will be visible from State Highway 64 and Rio Blanco County Road 122.
The goal for this prescribed burn is to reduce hazardous wildfire fuels in the area. This will reduce the potential of a larger wildfire that could result in high suppression costs and potentially burn more area than desired.
Additional goals are to improve wildlife habitat and enhance healthy vegetation composition and diversity.
All required permits have been issued by the Colorado State Air Quality, and local landowners have been contacted.
