BMS girls play hard

MEEKER I The middle school games in Meeker were filled with excitement the last two weekends. Beginning with the seventh grade B team Feb. 2 in Meeker’s win over the girls from Craig. They were led in scoring by Jasmine Patterson and Macy Collins. The girls showed a great deal of improvement and capitalized on scoring opportunities. The seventh grade B team had the game of the day, displaying their new press and increased tempo. The team came back from a 10 point deficit at halftime behind the defense and scoring of Sierra Williams, Avery Watt and Taylor Dodds. The three swarmed the ball handlers and created several turnovers in the second half. Their teammates gathered up stills on poor passing and Meeker took the lead late in the fourth quarter. The lead changed three times in the final minute of the game, with Craig making a basket with .2 seconds remaining in the game to give them a one point lead at the final buzzer. It was a great game, and an impressive turn around for the young lady Cowboys who lost to Craig by a much larger margin in their first game of the season.
The eighth grade girls combined their teams to play two games against the Bulldogs who were left with only seven girls following disciplinary action against three of their starters right before the game. Meeker had some success early in the game as Maggie Phelan drove to the basket and drew a foul and Anna Walsh got a strong rebound and put back. Craig packed their girls in a zone defense in the second half and Meeker struggled getting the ball to fall. Craig finished the day winning both eighth grade games.
The middle school girls went back to work this week preparing for their rematch with Steamboat last Saturday and the work paid off. The eighth grade A team beat the Sailors 35-28. Steamboat had beat the lady Cowboys in their previous encounter and the intensity of Meeker’s defense showed they were prepared for the challenge. Halle Ahrens led the team with 14 points, Kinzie Burke and Megan Smith dominated the boards and an overall team effort made for “a really fun game,” according to coach Kris Casey.
The B team played extremely hard and had to work with a running clock due to fewer participants in Steamboat. Madaline Amack led the scorers with four, Caroline and Julia Eskelson did a nice job rebounding and Faith Geodert, and Delenn Mobley had their best games with Goedert getting a steal and nice layup to finish.
The seventh grade girls came up short in the game against Steamboat but once again showed tremendous improvement. All the teams look forward to their end of the season tournament this weekend in Craig. Both the seventh and eighth grade teams will be very competitive in the tournament.
