BMS students compete at Colorado History Day

Barone Middle School students competed in the state competition for History Day Saturday. Five students and their coach traveled to Metro State for the competition.
Each year a theme is selected for the competition, this year was: Revolution, Reaction, and Reform. The event is a national competition, in which students spend the first part of the year choosing their topic and putting their project together. After choosing a topic, they can create a website, documentary, performance, exhibit or paper based on their topic. The only stipulation on the topic is that it fits the theme for the year.
There was a local competition in early February, three groups advanced to the regional competition in Grand Junction. In the website division, Noah Overton and T.J. Shelton presented their topic of “Carlos Hathcock, Revolutionary Sniper.” Jenna Walsh and Madi Shults also created a website on the civil rights movement. Caitlyn Shepherd, Taylor Frantz and Jamie Moyer competed in the performance category with their topic of women’s rights. In order to advance to the state competition, participants must finish in the top three at the regional level. Madi Shults and Jenna Walsh won the regional competition and Shepherd, Frantz and Moyer placed second to advance as well. Both teams did a great job representing Meeker in the state competition. Neither team advanced on to the finals but certainly learned a great deal from the experience. This is an outstanding example of the diversity of our youth and encourages the participation in a variety of activities. Thanks to Kris Casey for the extra time and effort she put into event for kids this year.
