MEEKER I The weather may have slowed the track season but not the track participants from Meeker.
The Barone Middle School track team had two meets cancelled due to weather, but members managed to pick up a replacement meet in Rangely on Saturday.
It was well worth the effort as three more records were broken and several Cowboys were event winners.
The day began with the medley relay, and the eighth grade boys’ team of Sheridan Harvey, Casey Turner, Hunter Garcia and Cole Brown started the meet right, breaking the school record and winning the event.
The eighth grade girls were not to be outdone, breaking two records of their own. They broke the 400-meter and 800-meter relay records in the first week of the season, so they changed things up a little and ran for the 1,600-meter relay record.
The record was set in 1995, and seemed extremely fast until Halle Ahrens, Reese Pertile, Julia Eskelson and Peyton Burke combined to beat the record by 10 seconds, with a 4:39 time.
The eighth grade girls won the meet as a team, and the seventh grade girls as well as both boys’ teams finished second in the meet.
The athletes have been consistent this season — despite the weather — showing improving every week.
The Barone Middle School team will travel to Craig on Saturday for their final meet of the season.
