MEEKER — The Barone Middle School eighth-grade volleyball team won the end-of-season tournament last Saturday in Craig.
Meeker was seeded first in the tournament. They faced Rangely in the first match. It began as a close first game, trading points back and forth. With the score 12-12, Maclaine Shults came into the game for Meeker.
The team worked together to keep the serve alive. Amanda Kendall played well at the net with several kills.
Shults served 13 consecutive points to help Meeker win the first game 25-12. The second game began as the first with trading points evenly.
At 14-12 Rangely in the lead, Kaysyn Chintala served nine consecutive points to put Meeker ahead 14-21. Rangely answered back to tie the score at 22-22.
Meeker’s Shults stepped up to lead her team to victory with a final score of 25-22.
In the second game of the tournament Meeker faced Craig. Meeker won the first game of the match 25-19. Meeker won the match by defeating Craig 25-14 in the second game.
The difference in the second game was Meeker’s serving. All of the girls had consecutive serves for points. Coach Blunt made substitutions during the match, but it didn’t seem to make any difference what combination of girls was on the floor.
Coach Hallie Blunt played all of the girls in the tournament. The girls displayed great teamwork throughout the entire season and tournament.
Meeker’s eighth-grade A-team ended its season undefeated.
The BMS seventh-grade team also swept through the tournament, earning first place honors.
They began the tournament with matches against Rangely winning two out of three matches. The team played the championship match against Craig, also in two matches.
All of the girls came together this season and played as a team.
