MEEKER — Seven middle school wrestling teams competed in the final tournament of the season last Saturday in Meeker. The Barone Middle School team lost two of six duals and a coin flip to finish in third place. Steamboat Springs won all of its duals and the tournament, while both Meeker and Craig each lost two, which led to the coin flip for second place.
“The kids wrestled really well,” head coach Adam Hoatson said of his 10 wrestlers, who won duals against Soroco, West Grand, East Grand and Craig but lost to North Park and the Sailors.
BMS eighth-graders Trey Morris, Ean Barrow, Justin Hardy and Jose Meza went undefeated in the season finale and won their respective weight classes.
Barrow pinned all six of his opponents, including the fastest pin of the tournament (seven seconds) and was also named the outstanding wrestler.
Seventh-graders Drew Collins and J.R. Crawford finished as runners-up, eighth-grader Collin Cochran was third and seventh-grade twins, Alex and Scott Smith both finished fourth. Eighth-grader Eathan Overton did not place.
Eighth-grader Christopher Ruckman competed in the first-ever sectional tournament in Grand Junction and qualified for the first-ever middle school state tournament to be held this Saturday in Loveland.
