MEEKER I Barone Middle School finished in second place last Saturday in Oak Creek as a team and crowned four individual champions.
This week, the Cowboys will host a tournament Saturday but most of their wrestlers will compete in the state-qualifying middle school regional tournament.
“It was a tough tournament but the kids wrestled well,” head coach Lee Overton said of the 10 teams in Oak Creek.
The young Cowboys finished second to Craig and advanced seven to the championship match and two into the consolation finals.
Jacob Pelloni (80), Sheridan Harvey (95), Casey Turner (135) and Brett McGruder (155) all won their individual brackets.
“Sheridan was finally pushed out of the first period and pinned his kid in the finals in the second period,” Overton said of the undefeated eighth-grader.
Harvey’s cousin Casey Turner is also undefeated this season.
“Casey went down a weight to wrestle a tough kid from Steamboat and won 7-6 in the finals,” Overton said.
Garrett Frantz (85), Josh Cochran (110) and Tyler Ilgen (heavyweight) all finished second in their respective weights. Jared Owens (145) and Tell Blanke (105) both finished fourth in their brackets.
The middle school regional tournament will be held in Fruita this Saturday and the top eight placers in each weight will qualify for the state meet to be held the following week at the National Western Complex in Denver.
