Bomb squad called for suspected pipe bombs

MEEKER — A man discovered what he believed to be two 1.5 foot pipe bombs at a home in Meeker. The unnamed man arrived at the Rio Blanco County Communications Center to report the suspicious items March 1 at 12:11 p.m.
The man brought the suspected pipe bombs to the courthouse parking lot. Lieutenant Glenn Wilson of the Meeker Police Department and Rio Blanco County deputies secured the area while the Grand Junction bomb squad was dispatched.
After notification, the owner of the residence came to the courthouse parking lot stating there was only water in the pipes, as he had been experimenting with freezing and thawing the pieces of pipe. Local authorities notified the bomb squad of the new information while they were en route to Meeker, so they could stand down and return to Grand Junction.
