Boys take 3rd, girls place 5th at Demon Invitational

MEEKER — The Meeker High School thinclads traveled to Glenwood Springs last Saturday for the 2008 Demon Invitational track meet.
Eleven schools of all classifications took part in an event that started in frigid temperatures at 8:30 a.m.
Host school Glenwood Springs dominated the girls and boys team scores with superior numbers and excellent talent.
The Meeker boys competed well with the larger schools placing third in the team standings.
Scoring points for MHS were the 3,200-meter relay team of Terrence Casias, Pat Love, Seth Boesch and Sam Love taking third place. Tyler Howey placed eighth in the 110-meter high hurdles and the 800-meter relay team of Brock Campbell, Caleb Ball, Joseph Galvan and Johnny Wix placed fifth.
Campbell also came in eighth place in the 300-meter IM hurdles with Tyler Howey closely behind him.
Junior Sam Love ran an excellent 800-meter run placing third in a field of 25 runners. Terrence Casias, Sam Love, Seth Boesch and Brock Campbell ran a sub 3:50 to place third in the 1600-meter relay.
In the field events, sophomore Johnny Wix swept the throwing events going more than 45 feet in the shot put and more than 130 feet in the discus. Terrence Casias made finals in the long jump, placing seventh place.
Team scores: Glenwood Springs – 214, Eagle Valley – 131.5, Meeker – 46, Roaring Fork – 43, Hayden – 42, Aspen – 28, Steamboat – 22, Rifle – 16. Soroco – 14, West Grand – 14, Basalt – 2
The Meeker girls hung close to third and fourth place most of the day but ran out of athletes to compete in the latter events and ended up in fifth.
Team scores: Glenwood Springs – 225, Eagle Valley – 82, Hayden – 61, West Grand – 59, Meeker – 54, Soroco – 51, Aspen – 18, Basalt – 17, Steamboat – 15, Rifle – 8, Roaring Fork – 4.
Timbre Shriver placed sixth in the 100-meter hurdles. Marki Cook ran a blistering 12.73 in the preliminary 100-meter dash and placed second overall in the finals. Gabie Goettel, Kelsey Rundberg, Sydney Cook and Timbre Shriver botched one handoff but still managed to place fourth in the 800-meter relay.
Rundberg, Shriver, Janae Kindall and Marki Cook took second in the 400-meter relay. Kelsey Rundberg placed fifth in the 400 with teammate Sydney Cook taking sixth.
Janae Kindall ran an excellent 200 and placed third. Freshman Chanler May scored seventh in the shot put with Jamie Gillis in eighth place.
Meg Neislanik and Sydney Cook placed sixth and seventh in the high jump.
Janae Kindall placed third in the triple jump with Meg Nieslanik 2 inches behind her for fifth. Neislanik and Gabie Goettel placed sixth and eighth in the long jump.
Meeker High School will compete Friday afternoon at the Rifle Invitational.
