MEEKER I Local veteran golfers Erik Brown and Lex Collins defended their home course winning the annual 27-hole, two-man scramble at the Meeker Golf Course on Saturday. The tournament featured two flights and 19 pairs.
Brown and Collins, who have partnered for the tournament since 1994 and are perennial money winners, shot a four-under par 30 to take the lead after nine. Although they added a stroke on the other two turns, they still won by two shots.
“Lex and Erik, what a great job,” local golf pro Jim Cook said of the first flight champions. “They don’t have the best swings around, but they are very competitive. They played well.”
Collins said the same about his partner and complimented his competitors, recent high school graduates from Rifle and Grand Junction, Kyler Smith and Skyler Miller.
“They were good,” Collins said of the young team.
Kyler’s dad, Todd, and his 13-year-old brother, Jacob, also finished with a gross score of 95, but they took first place net honors with a 79. Meeker locals Andy and Pat Coryell placed second with a net score of 82.
Eddie Rubin and Hank Kracht won a putt-off against George Back and Ted Stewart to win top honors in the second flight. Billy and Brandan Stewart were one shot back (105), finishing second.
Back and Stewart took top net honors, and there was a three-way tie for second net.
Jeff Asselin and Wayne Murray tied with Rod Crawford and Irvin Griffin and Brady Jensen and Roston Steiner.
The annual Ladies Deerfly will be held June 1 at the Meeker Golf Course.
