MEEKER I Ron Dupree, Meeker High School’s new football coach, does not play golf but he learned some things about the game after hosting the annual Kickoff Classic golf scramble last Saturday at the Meeker Golf Course.“You sure have a nice course here and it is a beautiful day,” coach Dupree said after the 18-hole tournament. “I hope to be better organized next year but the people have been super nice and have been a lot of help, kind of like good teamwork.”Norbert Boes, Dr. James Jex and Gary Stewart won the tournament with a six-under par 62, giving Willy Theos, J.C. and Anthony Watt second, two shots back.“Boes made most of the shots for us but the Doc is pretty good,” Stewart said of his teammates.Former football coach Shane Phelan, who played the tournament with his son Jake and local golf pro Jim Cook, finished third, one stroke behind Theos and the Watt team.“We really dragged him down,” Jake Phelan said of he and his dad’s play with the local pro but Cook didn’t see it that way.“The game changes when you have to use a baseball bat off of No. 1, a kid’s club on No. 3 and a hockey stick to putt on No. 7,” Cook said. “I usually strike out on No. 1.Coach Dupree is ready to start coaching his game of choice. Football practice starts Monday, Aug. 15 at 7 a.m., in the weightroom at MHS.
