Public Notice The Meeker Police Department has received several complaints in the past couple of months about phone and mail scams. We would like to notify everyone in the area to be aware of certain scams that have been used and to remind people not to give out personal information, or to send anyone any money unless you are sure you know the person who has contacted you. The first scam involves a person calling you and saying they are a relative maybe a grandson, or nephew that you haven’t spoken with in a while. The person says they are in trouble in another country, usually Mexico and they need you to wire them some money. If you wire them money they will call back and ask for more. This is not a relative and you should never wire money without checking out this story by making an attempt to contact your relative or family first. The second scam is a clearing house or lottery will contact you through the mail or by phone and say you have won a prize, but you must send them some cash first to pay the taxes or handling fees. They may even send you a check and say you can cash it as soon as you wire the money. After you wire the money you will find that the check is no good, but it will be too late. NO LEGITIMATE LOTTERY OR CLEARING HOUSE REQUIRES YOU TO SEND THEM MONEY UP FRONT. If you respond in any way these people will continue to contact you. The best thing you can do is throw these offers in the trash. If you are not sure if the offer is legitimate contact the Meeker Police Department at 878-5555 and we will be happy to check it out for you. Remember any contact you have with these people just gives them more opportunity to get your personal information. It is to your benefit not to write or talk to them at all.
