Former Meeker resident Sherry Rubin and her daughter, Amanda Back, shot a five-under par 29 on the front nine but added eight strokes on the back nine to finish with a 66.
“It was by far the best round of the day,” local golf pro Jim Cook said of Rubin and Back’s first nine holes.
Loren and Deanna Forney of Grand Junction shot a 34 on the front nine as did Tami Holt and Pam Buerger of Rifle, but the Forney team took two shots off on the back nine and Holt and Buerger added two, finishing with the second best gross score.
The tie for first place was not broken, as the Forney team took first place gross honors while Rubin and Back finished with the best net score (58). Craig’s Patty Bruchez and April Brastetter shot a 35 on the front nine and 41 on the back to finish with the second best net score (64) in the first flight.
Local veteran golfers Peggy Back and Jan Henderson were the best golfers in the second flight, shooting an opening round of 42 before taking three shots off the back nine, holding off Danielle Feora and Jill Massey for the best score. Feora and Massey shot a 40 on the front and added two on the back to finish one shot behind the champions.
Annette Franta and Kristi Shelton also shot an 81, but they took first place with the best net score (64). Meeker’s Clair Howey and Tobie Smith were consistent, shooting 42 each round, finishing with the second best net score, one shot behind the champions.
Cook said Father’s Day weekend will be the next competitive weekend with the annual White River Electric tournament June 14 and the season’s biggest tournament, the Marvine Ranch two-man best ball June 15-16.
“Marvine Ranch has added $2,500 extra to the pot,” Cook said.
