MEEKER I Meeker Sports-man’s Club (MSC) held two archery events this year. The first was an indoor 3D archery tournament held at the Rio Blanco County Fairgrounds with approximately 60 shooters in attendance. The second was an outdoor 3D field and Fita rounds held at the club on Highway 13, with approximately 45 shooters in attendance. MSC also co-sponsored an indoor 3D shoot at the Rifle Rendezvous.
MSC was able to replace 18 of their 3D targets before the shoots this year and competitors were excited to break in the new targets! The sale of the old targets helped jump start a club in Rifle which is still in the works and some locals got great deals on targets for their backyards.
Spectators are welcome at all MSC events.
“These archery events draw some professional (sponsored) archers, most of the competitors are out of towners and these folks are interesting to watch,” MSC member and event organizer Dave Murray said. “The way we do the prizes/payout, anyone can take home money, you don’t have to be a pro.”
MSC handed out almost $1,100 in prize money and had some nice door prizes donated from local businesses. In the future we are looking at some two-day events that will hopefully have attendance well over the 100 mark and bring people into local businesses.
MSC is working in conjunction with the Colorado Bowhunter’s Association and the Colorado State Archery Association for these events.
“There may be a state tournament in little ol’ Meeker in the near future,” Murray said.
