RANGELY I Basketball season is here … almost.
Thanks to the advantage of being in the Mountain time zone, Colorado Northwestern Community College’s men’s and women’s basketball teams will officially kick off the season Wednesday, Sept. 30.
“Since the NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association) headquarters is in Central time, we can start at 11 (Wednesday night), since Oct. 1 is the first official day you can practice,” said assistant coach Kenneth Michaud.
The midnight practices will be a first at CNCC, Michaud said, but are popular around the country as an entertaining way to start the season.
“We want to make things real exciting and create a buzz around campus,” said Michaud, who is an assistant coach for both the men’s and women’s teams. “We’ll go through some drills. The scrimmages will be about 20 minutes.”
The CNCC women’s team will start at 11 p.m. at Hefley Gym, followed by the men’s team at midnight. The men’s team is coached by Adrian Hayes, and the women’s team by Antowin Edwards.
