RBC I Five members of the Colorado Northwestern Community College Horse Show Team placed recently in an Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) competition in Billings, Mont.
The IHSA is an organization with approximately 8,000 students competing nationwide. There are six levels of IHSA showing for students to compete in.
The school that hosts a show provides horses for the students to ride so no student has to own a horse in order to compete.
Students are not allowed to ride the horses prior to their class and there is a draw system for selecting horses for the riders in each class.
Students are evaluated on the rail (and sometimes a pattern is required), on their horsemanship skills and the ability to ride and show horses they are not familiar with.
This was the CNCC Horse Show Team’s first-ever show weekend, in which there were three recognized shows.
The CNCC students who placed were: Amanda Witcher: first, second and sixth places; Amber Parmley: fourth, second and second places; Courtney Hibbs: fifth, second and second places; Jamie Levin: sixth, fifth and sixth places; and Tasha Gibson: fifth, seventh and second places.
The next show is scheduled for fall 2014.
