CNCC raises $17K with Relay for Life

RANGELY — CNCC hosted its fifth annual “Relay For Life,” raising more than $17,000 for the American Cancer Society Research Center, teaming up for the fight against cancer.
Organizers’ goal was to raise awareness in our county, provide resources and to raise money for a cure. Nine teams participated in the event. Everyone who donated his/her time, money and energy should be commended.
Now it’s time for the wrap-up meeting. Come join your team members and committee chairs for some conversation and refreshments on Wednesday, Oct. 1 in the conference room at the Weiss Center at 5:30 p.m. For more information, call Leana Cox in Rangely at 675-3334.
People have been asking, “Who raised the most money for the Relay of Life?” The answer is the eighth-grade Star Wars Young Padewans who raised $7,963.20. This ambitious, energetic group held car washes and yard sales, sold track markers and raised funds through dining at local restaurants. They worked on raising these funds for several months. Special thanks go out to their parents, grandparents and their whole families, for that matter. Coming up in second place were the “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” Deserado Mine team, with $6,825. This team, lead by Al Hillard, raised funds through employee donations and employer contributions.
Special recognition is given to Robert Haag, who walked 105 laps at the Relay. Leana Cox, overall coordinator of this year’s relay, put in a tremendous amount of time and energy to put this event together, along with Pauline Hillard and the rest of the committee. Stephen Garnett, the coach for CNCC Spartans men’s and women’s basketball team, registered the night of the event and were instrumental in the set-up and break-down this year along with head baseball coach Tom Cassera who had his baseball guys up at the crack-of-dawn to set up and late to help with the Luminaria Ceremony that Jon Bader pulled off with the help of Gelean Bell.
Seven other teams helped raise the remainder of the funds, bringing the grand total raised by the Rio Blanco County Relay for Life to more than $17,000. Congratulations to these teams, their members and all those who contributed in any way to raise these funds to help fight cancer.
