Collins demonstrated good sportsmanship by being respectful to his opponents, referees and his coaching staff. The Meeker Peewee wrestling club would like to congratulate Collins on this accomplishment.
The wrestling club sent 37 wrestlers to attend the last tournament of the season hosted by New Castle at Coal Ridge High School Saturday. The Cowboys crowned four champions, seven consolation champions as well as eight third place, six fourth place and 12 participants.
Coming home with top honors were Jesus Holland-Gonzalez, James Amick, Sheridan Harvey and Casey Turner. Runners-up were Anthony Holland-Gonzalez, Doak Mantle, Cody Nielson, Joshua Cochran, Jake Smith, Tristin Pelloni and Colt Lewis. Consolation champs were Tannen Kennedy, Jacob Pelloni, Garrett Frantz, Austin Russell, Conner Pursley, Dillon Frantz, Jacob Nielson and Edward Pursley. Fourth place went to Kesston Hobbs, Tevin Secrest-Pelloni, CJ Wangnild, Brett McGruder, Austin Sanderson and Anthony Kelley. Kascia Cochran, Tristen Tonozzi, Anna Castle, Daylon Nielson, Jeffery Wagner, Tony Collins, Austin Purcell, Asa Kelley, Aaron Cochran, Qynton Larson, Fabian Jones and Caleb Bradford wrestled but did not place.
The peewee wrestling season ended with the annual banquet held Monday, May 5 at the Rio Blanco County Fairgrounds. The wrestlers received Cowboy Awards from head coach Todd Morris along with words of encouragement and short anecdotes about each one. Sixth-grade wrestlers Asa Kelley, Aaron Cochran, Qynton Larson, Anthony Kelley, Fabian Jones, John Mac Sheridan were presented with an emotional “good luck” wish from Morris as they continue their wrestling careers in middle school.
“This season was a challenging one with a lot of changes, but the wrestlers did a great job keeping focused and having fun,” Morris said.

  • Mormon crickets have hatched near Rangely. They were all sighted on BLM land north of Hwy. 64 near the junction of CR 96 and CR 1, down a dirt road near the Moffat County line. The picture shown was taken yesterday by Mary Meinen from Rangely. She says the crickets are about the size of a ladybug (less than 1/2”). Some of them are actually yellow in color but most of them are darker. They are milling around and getting ready to start moving soon. Note: Photo is not to scale.
Rio Blanco County and the White River and Douglas Creek Conservation Districts are still asking for your help to identify additional hatch-outs of crickets so that control efforts can be put in place. The success of the program will highly depend upon local landowners and the public helping to locate crickets as soon as they hatch.
