RANGELY I The Rangely Middle School wrestling team competed in Steamboat Springs on Saturday and returned with several placers, including champion Tytus Coombs.
“Tytus wrestled very well,” head coach Derek Stolworthy said. “He is dominant on his feet and can get out from the bottom at will.”
The young Panthers are few in numbers but solid in the lineup from 85 pounds to 110, as three of them returned as consolation champs, including Calvin Bishop (80), C.J. Lucero (90) and Devin Ramirez (110).
“Calvin had a tough semifinal match and C.J. did an outstanding job after losing in the semis,” Stolworthy said. “When the going got tough, C.J., got going.”
Devin Ramirez was consolation champ at 110.
“Devon looked awesome. He’s finding his rhythm and is looking like the wrestler the coaches know he is,” Stolworthy said.
Justin Rusher (85), Lane Gillard (95) and Mark Marcano (105) all wrestled but did not place in the Carl Ramuno Memorial.
“(Assistant coach) Claude Rose and I would like to thank all of the support from the parents who show up and support not only their own kids, but the whole team,” Stolworthy said. “I would also like to thank Lynn Rusher specifically for the excellent food she made for the wrestlers after weigh-ins.”
The Panthers got more mat time wrestling in a triangular in Meeker on Tuesday. The teams included Oak Creek and they will wrestle in a tournament in Oak Creek on Saturday.
