Council hopes to get people talking

MEEKER I Since the oil shale boom in the 1980s, Meeker’s Human Resource Council has sought ways to highlight the community’s needs and assets, bringing the two together for the benefit of all. The council, chaired by Rhonda Hilkey, has also been responsible for accepting United Way grant applications and distributing those funds.
The council called for a “group meeting” last week in an attempt to “get new energy involved,” Hilkey said. Thirty-five individuals met Wednesday to open a discussion about the ongoing needs of the community. Of those 35, 10 indicated a desire to become members of the council.
Facilitated by Corrie Ponikvar from Moffat County United Way, which raised $498,000 for United Way grants last year, those attending the meeting identified the most pressing needs in the community. Topping this list? Job creation and affordable housing, followed by the need for a trained workforce, collaboration between entities, extracurricular activities, school funding, mental health and early intervention.
At a follow-up meeting Nov. 4, HRC members will further discuss ways to address those identified needs. Hilkey said she hopes “getting 35 people together will get people talking,” and generate new ideas and ways to help the community take care of its most pressing concerns.
