MEEKER I The Meeker High School Cowboy boys’ basketball team played three tough games last week, and coach Klark Kindler was unable to attend Tuesday night’s game due to illness.
The game against Rangely was a hard-fought battle that found the Cowboys down one after the final buzzer.
Logan Hughes led all scorers with 20 points scored, and he was followed by Zack Dinwiddie with 17 points, Eli Newman with six, Doak Mantle and Valentine Rosas each added five, Kash Atwood had four and Trapper Merrifield had two.
On Friday night, the team hosted an a very tough Paonia team.
The Cowboys jumped out early, playing outstanding as they took a 21-18 lead after the first eight minutes of play.
Paonia made a run in the second quarter taking, the lead at half.
The third quarter found the Cowboys cold offensively and Paonia was allowed to stretched their lead.
Meeker made a great run in the final period, but fell short by an 11-point 67-56 margin.
Saturday was another close game for the Cowboys, who showed some tremendous heart fighting back from a 19-5 first-quarter deficit.
The Meeker boys rallied to bring the game to within six at the half.
The third quarter was a relatively even period and the Cowboys made every effort to close the gap in the final period.
Three starters fouled out of the game and things were not going their way as the foul count was double digits against the Cowboys.
Meeker’s boys scored 19 points in the fourth quarter but lost by a 62-56 margin.
The Meeker boys will travel to Paonia on Friday for a rematch. With the experience of these close games, the Cowboys will learn and improve and will no doubt be the team nobody wants to draw in the post season.
