MEEKER I Many Meeker football players have been lifting weights, playing catch and attending camps this summer, in preparation of the upcoming high school season.
“Everybody is excited to get started,” Meeker’s head football coach Shane Phelan said. “We have been lifting all summer, we start two-a-days on the 15th, our golf tournament, the Cowboy Kickoff Classic is Aug. 20 and we play our first game the following Friday.”
More than 25 players attended the first day of camp Monday and many helped coaches host a free football clinic for younger kids Tuesday, before the high school kids officially start practice Aug. 15.
“The camp will give us a better feel of what we have,” coach Phelan said. “We have some really good football players this year, we just need to find out how to use everyone but it’s nice to have options.”
The Cowboys will open the season on the road, playing in Ault on Aug. 26, then in Silt against Coal Ridge before their first home game on a brand new field in Starbuck Stadium, against Holyoke.
Coach Phelan would like to invite supporters to play in the annual Cowboy Kickoff Classic golf tournament, a four-person, scramble format, featuring several “special rules and contests.”
