Next three games determine league championship
MEEKER I The Meeker boys’ basketball team secured a home game for the first round of district tournament with a big win Friday night against the Vail Christian Saints. The Cowboys will compete for the Northwest League championship.
Meeker will play Paonia, Hotchkiss and Rangely in the next week and the games will determine the top four places in the conference.
Friday night the Cowboys came out with a very strong first quarter, knowing the Saints were going to be tough on their own court. Meeker took a first quarter 24-19 lead and built their lead to 10 by half time, 39-29.
Vail made a run in the third quarter but the Cowboys were too much with three scorers in double figures. Jeremy Musgrave and Raul Lopez each had 18 points in the game and Dylan Mobley added an impressive sixteen points to the win. Rounding out the scoring was Ty Dunham and Joe Newman with four each and Kash Atwood added two.
The boys’ team won themselves the advantage of playing at home, and set up a week of basketball where they control their own destiny. Win this week and they are in first place, a great accomplishment any season, but very impressive when the team has climbed its way to the top through hard work and commitment to getting better every week. The league is extremely competitive and it has created a situation that will no doubt bring exciting games.
