MEEKER | Cowboy Football is set to kick off Friday, Aug. 24, 7 p.m. at Starbucks Stadium. The opening regular season game has the Cowboys taking on the Skiers from Aspen, Colo.
“Aspen is coming off a strong year, finishing 8-1,” said head coach Shane Phelan. “They played last year in post season 2A ball and we are looking forward to a competitive game.”
There are 48 boys out for football this year, one of the largest teams Meeker has had. The coaches are looking to the 11 seniors to provide leadership for the team which is ranked fifth in preseason. Coaching this year alongside Phelan are assistant coaches Andy Coryell, Darby Finley, Matt Dupire and new to the staff this year, Matt Scott, who is helping coach the linemen with Finley.
This first game is being called the First Responders Game. Colorado is in the midst of a record-setting wildfire year; the dedication to our community shown by our local first responders has not gone unnoticed and the Cowboys are wanting to honor and “say thank you to those that have done so much for us,” Phelan said. First responders are invited to attend this game and be honored on the field at half-time by the Cowboys and the Meeker community.
Next up for the Cowboys is the JV team which will play their first game of the season in Steamboat Springs, Colo., on Monday, Aug. 27 at 4:30 p.m.
