MEEKER I No matter the outcome of the final match of the regular season, the lady Cowboy varsity volleyball team will have to travel for the round of the district tournament, which will start Tuesday, Oct. 25, after losing two matches in Vail last Saturday.
Meeker traveled to Vail to play league matches against Vail Christian and Paonia and returned home without a win, losing to Vail Christian in three games and Paonia in four.
“The games were closer than the scores show,” head coach Christy Atwood said of the 14-25, 19-25 and 16-25 losses. “We played well against Vail Christian, they would just go on runs of two or three and we couldn’t get them back. We executed the things we intended too, just not good enough to get a win.”
Vail Christian plays against teams in the 2A Northwest League but is actually a 1A school, so although they can win and currently led the league in wins, they will not compete in the district tournament.
After the loss to Vail Christian, Meeker got the play the team with the second most league wins, Paonia, pushing the lad Eagles to four games but only able to win one.
“We started out really slow against Paonia, it wasn’t our best first game of the season,” Atwood said of the lopsided 8-25 loss. “We came back in the second game to win (25-14) but we couldn’t stop their momentum in the third and fourth games.”
Meeker lost the final to games of the Paonia match 12-25 and 20-25.
“Katie (Morgan) has recovered well and had a phenomenal day and Bailey (Atwood) played well all-round,” Atwood said. “Aly (Ridings) served 100 percent for the weekend and that helped us out.”
Meeker will play their final game of the regular season at home against West Grand this Saturday.
“We’ll have to travel next Tuesday so it would be nice to get a win this weekend and get some positive momentum to make something happen Tuesday,” Atwood said. “I’m looking forward to Saturday.”
