MEEKER I A new year’s winning streak and another decisive conference win has put the Meeker High School boys’ basketball team in the rankings this week. Colorado Preps put the Cowboys at No. 9, adding the remark that “The red hot Meeker Cowboys have won five straight.”
The team, behind head coach Klark Kindler, are gaining momentum and confidence as post season approaches. They hosted Soroco on Friday night and came out with a 61-48 win.
“It was closer than the final score would indicate,” Kindler said. “We made our free throws down the stretch and got away from them late.”
Meeker led after the first quarter 15-8, but trailed at half 30-28. The Cowboys did what they have been doing all year, making better adjustments then their opponent at the half. They outscored the Rams 14-7 in the third and 19-11 in the final eight minutes.
They were led in scoring by Jeremy Musgrave with 24 points, followed by Dylan Mobley with 14, Raul Lopez with 10, Ty Dunham with seven and Matt Frantz, Kash Atwood and Joe Newman all adding a bucket.
Meeker played Hayden on Saturday, and Kindler said, “We got down 9-0 right out of the gate and then went on a 23-2 run to get a comfortable lead.”
The Cowboys got the lead and never looked back as they beat the Tigers 65-45.
Even scoring helped secure the win as Mobley and Musgrave had 18 points eac, Lopez added 16, Dunham had eight and Newman added five.
Conference play is coming close to an end, and Kindler said, “We are close to locking up the first-round home game for the pig-tails and we are right there competing for the conference championship.”
The team hopes to add to its streak as members face Vail Christian on Friday night, then on to Baggs, Wyo., on Saturday.
