MEEKER I Very few times in high school basketball do you see a team score 100 points in a game. The De Beque Dragons learned a lesson the hard way Saturday night by trying to stay with the high-powered offense of the No. 2-ranked team in the state and were soundly beaten 100-33 by the Cowboys.
Meeker’s record now stands at a perfect 16-0 for the season. Last Friday night in Kremmling, Meeker picked up win No. 15 against the West Grand Mustangs 63-31.
Meeker settled for a slim 10-7 first quarter margin. Meeker lengthened its lead in the second as Brock Campbell hit a pair of treys and Dakota Rowlett scored six more points to lead the Cowboys to a 28-14 halftime score. The Cowboys defense held the Mustangs to just seven points per quarter for the first three quarters, and only 10 points in the final period. Meanwhile Meeker was able to extend its lead in both of the final quarters to finish the game with a 63-31 victory. Rowlett led all scorers with 19, followed by Jacob with 13 and Gerloff with 11.
Saturday evening’s game with the De Beque Dragons was a rout from the word go. Unable to defend Meeker’s Mitch Jacob from the arc, or stop Dakota Rowlett from inside the paint, the Cowboys scored at will against the smaller Dragon team. The first half ended with Meeker up 52-18, with Jacob counting for 28 of his game-high 30 points and Rowlett adding 13 more.
Today, the Cowboys will travel to Collbran for a non-league contest with Plateau Valley, and Saturday afternoon they travel to Rangely for the county championship game at 4 p.m. against the Panthers.
