MEEKER I The Meeker boys’ basketball team continued its winning ways after the Christmas break by picking up two more wins, upping its season record to a perfect 10-0.
Last Tuesday night, the Cowboys held off a game Roaring Fork team 60-53, and then on Friday traveled to Walden to cash in on a 79-25 victory over the North Park Wildcats.
Just two days after the Christmas break, the Cowboys hosted the Roaring Fork Rams in a non-league contest. Meeker gathered a slim lead in the first quarter 11-8 and extended that to 36-22 at halftime. Mitch Jacob led the scoring for Meeker in the second period as he was able to garner 19 points in the quarter, which included four 3-point baskets. Meeker extended its lead in the third stanza to 49-33 before the Rams put on a rush in the final period to try and catch the Cowboys. Roaring Fork closed the gap at the final buzzer by outscoring the ‘Pokes in the final period 20-11, but Meeker had the game in hand and finished with the 60-53 final score.
Last Friday, Meeker traveled to Walden for a contest with the North Park Wildcats. The Wildcats came with the intention of upsetting the No. 2 state-ranked Cowboys as they quickly jumped to a 4-0 lead. North Park’s lead was short-lived though as Meeker then settled down and found its game. The Cowboys only allowed the host team one more basket in the first period, and only one basket in the second en route to a 47-8 halftime lead. All 12 members of the Meeker team played in both halves of the game and every one of the team contributed to the final Cowboy victory score of 79-25. Meeker was led in scoring by senior Tyrel Gerloff.
This week, Meeker will host the Hayden Tigers and travel to Vail for a contest against the Vail Christian Saints.
“We are in the start of the league season,” said Cowboy Coach Klark Kindler. “The next four to five weeks will be big games for us.”
Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. Friday and 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
