MEEKER I The Cowboy football team remains undefeated (5-0) after pounding the Holyoke Dragons by a 50-7 score on a neutral field in Denver on Saturday. With the win, Meeker moved up in the Maxpreps rankings to No. 3 in the state.
The Cowboys will have another long trip ahead of them on Friday as they travel to Leadville to play the Leadville Panthers.
The Cowboys drove to Denver early Saturday, took care of business, then got back on the bus and were back in Meeker by 9 p.m., undefeated.
The Cowboys jumped on the Dragons early, scoring 22 points in the first quarter while shutting out Holyoke. The Dragons scored their lone touchdown late in the second quarter, after the Cowboys had scored two more touchdowns in the second stanza.
Meeker junior T.J. Shelton ran wild, carrying the ball 16 times for 187 yards and scoring four touchdowns. Shelton’s classmate and quarterback Jake Phelan rushed eight times for 82 yards and one touchdown as he completed eight of 12 passes for 196 yards and two touchdowns.
Phelan completed passes to five different receivers, including Shelton once. Hunter Garcia and Cade Rowlett also each caught one pass from Phelan.
Rowlett’s 28-yard reception ended up in the end zone. Senior Tristin Pelloni caught two passes for 37 yards, and Raul Lopez caught three passes for 110 yards, including one for a 52-yard touchdown.
The Cowboys totaled 485 offensive yards and their defense allowed only 101 total yards.
Devon Pontine led the Cowboys with three solo tackles on defense and was in on six others. Shelton was in on 13 tackles and Casey Turner helped on 11. Lopez finished with seven tackles while Robby Jensen, Chase Rule, Matt Frantz and Phelan were each in on six tackles and Dillon Frantz recorded five.
