MEEKER I The Cowboys had two nail biters this weekend in district play. Friday, after the decisive win over Soroco on Tuesday, Meeker took on the Cowboys from Plateau Valley.
A one-point game, Meeker took victory 57-56 and looked forward to a chance to play for first place.
Vail Mountain, who was victorious over Vail Christian the night before, came ready to play. Meeker won the previous match 49-33, but Vail’s lineup had changed this game.
The first quarter the Cowboys had a slow start but outscored the Gore Rangers for the next three quarters to end regular time tied.
In overtime the Rangers hit a three-point goal followed by a two-pointer before the Cowboys were able to answer. With a heartbreaking loss of 59-64, the Cowboys sealed up second place and will now travel to Vail for regionals.
Region 8 teams this year are, in order of rank, Vail Mountain, Meeker, Yuma and Clear Creek. Meeker will take on Yuma in game one Friday at 4 p.m., the winner will advance to the final Saturday at 1 p.m.
