MEEKER — The Meeker Cowboys opened the basketball season in style Friday night with a convincing 63-41 victory over the Olathe Pirates in Olathe.
The Cowboys began quickly in Olathe opening up a 9-4 lead to start the game. By the end of the first quarter that lead had extended to 16-6. Meeker continued its scoring pace in the second period with 17 points.
However, Olathe was able to find the mark for 13 points of their own. Meeker closed out the first half with a 33-19 lead.
Neither team was able to gain any ground in the third period as both teams scored seven points to end the stanza at 40-26 for the visiting Cowboys.
Olathe scored 15 points in the fourth but the Cowboys countered with 23 of their own to close out the game for the 63-41 victory.
The Cowboys forced 33 Pirate turnovers enroute to the win.
Dakota Rowlette led the Cowboys in scoring with 19. Balanced rebounding amongst Meeker’s Gerloff, Brown and Rowlette helped in the Meeker victory.
