MEEKER I The Cowboy wrestling team competed in the Grand Junction Tiger JV tournament with Meeker and Rangely as the only small schools in the field of Grand Valley JV teams, including the two Grand Junction teams, Palisade, Fruita, Delta, Olathe and Montrose.
“It was a good confidence builder for our team going into the end of the season,” head coach J.C. Watt said of the competition.
The Cowboys hosted the Hayden Tigers Wednesday after press time and will host a triangular this Saturday with teams from West Grand and Soroco taking the mat at 11 a.m. The Cowboys will be the only team of the three to dual the Moffat County Bulldogs Saturday.
“It’s the last event of the season to get all the kinks ironed out,” Watt said of Saturday’s competition.
Meeker sophomores J.C. Henderson and Anthony Watt both won all three of their matches and the titles in the 125 and 132 pound brackets, respectively. Cowboy senior Ethan Overton finished second at 195, while Tristin Pelloni (106) won three matches and lost one to finish third, the same placing J.R. Crawford earned at 182. Aaron Cochran returned from injury and was the only other Cowboy to place, finishing fourth at 132. Kylloe Goedert, Sebastian Clarke, Lathrop Hughes, Calvin Shepherd and Issac Robertson also wrestled but did not place. Willis Begaye and Justin Hardy did not compete because of injuries but are expected to wrestle this weekend.
