The Meeker Herald – 125 years ago n  At last Meeker has a meat market. The genial and popular Ed Bellows has opened a meat market in the Holden building.n We call attention to our litigious citizens to the card of an attorney who is well-known to the bar of the state as an accomplished lawyer and gentleman – Mr. John T. Shumate – who has had extensive practice in the courts of the state, and is especially conversant with Land Laws.n There should be a wagon road all the way down on the north side of the river as it could be made at very little expense and thus avoid fording the river in five or six places.n A delegation of NV boys composed of foreman Ed Wilber, Bud Beall, Milt Burch and two other bloods came up from Powell Park Sunday afternoon to attend Sabbath school. It is doubtful if all the gang attended divine worship.
The Meeker Herald – 50 years ago n The WREA board of directors selected the winner of naming contest for their new community room. There were between 40 and 50 entires submitted. The board selected the entry of Mrs. Merle Martin, “Kilowatt Korner,” a most appropriate name for this fine community room.n The 4th of July Meeker Massacre pageant committee, John Wix, Mary Villa, Mrs. Dub Miller, Mrs. Dorothy Barrett and Jim Wilson, met to organize this year’s pageant.n Miss Mabel Michaely became the bride of Lawrence L. Reagle on Sunday afternoon, May 14. The pretty family wedding took place at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lou Reagle at noon, with Rec. Gordon Benesh, pastor of the Meeker Methodist church, officiating. n Marshal Sam Cron has asked that we publish for him an announcement that all shooting of firearms at the city dump on Sulphur Creek north of Meeker must stop. Mr. Dodo who owns the land where the dump is located is fearful that some of his livestock will be hit by stray bullets.n About 10 days ago Mr. Bill Bright opened his Bright Spot Drive-in for the summer and this week Eddie Wilson and son Don are announcing that their Wilson A&W Drive-in will be open Saturday for the season.
The Meeker Herald – 25 years ago n Spokesmen from the First National Bank of the Rockies and Peoples State Bank of Meeker denied this week that their banks were in any serious financial difficulty after being identified as such in a Denver Post article Sunday.n Members of the school board bit the bullet and agreed on most of the projected $170,000 in budget cuts to be made. Chief among those items under the axe was the closing of the intermediate school, several reductions in athletics, a projected $40,000 in savings at Rock School and $14,000 of cuts in research and Medicare allowance.n Selected by the MHS faculty for the Quigg Newton awards this year are Ward Whiteman and Trish Bradfield. The award is given to two seniors each year for their all-around performance in school and in the community.n Mr. and Mrs. Fred Day announce the engagement of their daughter, Marnell, to David Wade Bradfield, son of Carol Bradfield of Meeker and Harold Bradfield of Meeker. n Clem Clark captured the $100 savings bond this year by taking first place in Opticus Studio’s Little Cutie Contest. The second place $75 savings bond goes to Allison Hall, and Matt Brennan will walk away with a $50 bond for third place.
The Rangely Times – 45 years ago n Bob Steele was one of seven Boy Scout leaders on the Western Slope to receive a Silver Beaver award for his service and dedication to the community’s youth.n The Great Birnam Bros. Circus will be in Rangely for two performances. The circus will be set up behind the Bestway Store, on the lot next to the Rio Roll skating rink. n Glenn Urquhart is the valedictorian for the RHS class of 1966. Salutatorian is Sally Cheedle. n At the Campus Theatre: “Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine” starring Vincent Price and Frankie Avalon. n More than 100 people were present during the afternoon tea sponsored by the Friends of the Library Sunday, May 15.n Prom king and queen for 1966: Junior Matrisciano and Carrie Moore.

His parents, Bill and Martha Mitchem, traveled to Fort Collins for the commencement exercises. n Wade and Linda Cox announce the arrival of their son, Dustin Gene. He was born May 9 at 2:45 p.m. at Rangely District Hospital. Maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Robert Padilla. Paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Mace Cox, all of rangely. n The 1986 Region 4 Hang Gliding Championships will be held at Blue Mountain near Dinosaur on May 24-June 1. n “Last week unleaded gas was selling for 75 cents a gallon in Texas. Just a few years ago the government was predicting $5 a gallon gas by the end of the decade.”
