– Oil prospecting is now a live issue in this county.
– Harry Kincher, who recently returned home after spending several years on the coast, left on Wednesday for Glenwood to take the physical examination for entrance into the U.S. Aviation corps. Harry is a graduate of Rio Blanco High school, class of 1914, and is a mighty good boy.
– Cold nights and thawing days prevailed up to Wednesday, when a “northern”—mixed with snow, set in.
– This is a great country in which a man who isn’t satisfied with his walk in life can always run for something.

– Special recognition was given to two Rio Blanco County law officers Feb. 5 when State Patrolman Milton Jones presented Sheriff Bob Kracht and his undersheriff, Ron Hilkey, with an award certificate and medallion. A rescue mission which saved the life of a young Rifle woman on Oct. 29 earned the special Red Cross Certificate of Merit for these two men.
– U.S. Congressman Wayne Aspinall notified the Meeker Herald last Friday that the Bureau of Outdoor Recreation has approved $10,764 for further development of the White River Recreation area, 26 miles east of Meeker on the White River.
– Rio Blanco County Road and Bridge department employees, when they receive their paychecks today, will notice a welcome increase in wages amounting to about 10 percent, effective the first of February.

– Five members of the MHS wrestling team are on their way to the state tournament this weekend, but that’s not nearly as many as coach Mike Tate hoped would go. The wrestlers going to state are Chad Morgan, Derrick Robinson, Ron Kelly Crawford, Jacob Stewart and Levi Henry.
– The hills will come to life this weekend with the sound of roaring snowmobiles, as the sixth running of the Meeker Hillclimb takes place at Devil’s Hole. More than 200 entries are expected to try to make the run.
– The Rocky Mountain Bowstrings Team Shooters scored big at the World Class Target Archery Tournament in Las Vegas.

– Mrs. Mary Wilkins of Rangely is listed in Who’s Who of American Women, the editors of the newly published fifth edition have announced. The author of 17 books, Mrs. Wilkin’s latest is “Last Two Elves in Denmark.”
– What will happen to the country people and the small towns by the year 2000? The United States will still be 3,628,150 square miles but there will be another 100 million people. The balance between rural and urban America must be restored. There could be a different America in the year 2000. It could consist of a countryside filled with “clusters” of small cities, towns and rural communities, each with its own jobs, its own industries, its own college, medical center, with farms and ranches in these clusters, fully sharing in the national prosperity. Rangely must continue to work, along with all other rural areas, for improved public services and facilities for industry, better schools and libraries and theaters, better water and sewer systems, adequate hospital and medical facilities, development of job opportunities.
– They say TV is really in its infancy, which helps explain why you have to get up so much to change it.
– The Bureau of Mines is now forecasting that there will be “at least some commercial productions of oil from shale by 1980.”

– Because financial statements were end of the year totals, Peach went into more detail than usual. Sales tax comparisons show overall revenue up 1 percent over last year, this in spite of a pretty substantial decline in oil related revenue which was only a third of what it was in 1980.
– The Panther wrestlers qualified six young men for the state tournament and places fourth as a team at districts last Friday and Saturday at Grand Junction. The following wrestlers will be representing Rangely High School at the state tournament: Shannon Rasmussen, Kyle Olree, Jeff Matrisciano, Randy Elam, David Williams and Shane Aplanalp.
