Days Gone By in Rio Blanco County

The Meeker Herald — 125 years ago

n To the teachers of Rio Blanco County: I ask you to be circumspect, and so act in the wild, unsettled country, that there will be no gossip about you.  I do not think that girls should go to public dances without chaperonage, and they should leave at a respectable hour. The young men should remember that no gentleman would be guilty of drinking when ladies are present.

n “Confused and upset” was the way Dr. Robert Dorsett described the way he was feeling about some of the things he saw going on at Pioneers Hospital. Included in his list were his concerns over a top-heavy administration, a business office that is overstaffed and not getting the job done, money being spend on what he felt was unnecessary remodeling expenses, and spending more money on sending a person to school for six weeks to learn how to run the hospital’s $75,000 computer.

n Rumors were flying thick and fast after things blew up late last week about the area’s first “computer caper” which involved RBC Development Corporation director Phillip Fletcher and county employees John Montgomery and Reed Haughey. What actually happened, said county sheriff Ron Hilkey, “is that they were trying to get the RBCDC’s computer up and going.”

n Peggy Back and Sue Taylor were the lucky winners of the $25 meat-of-your-choice raffle sponsored last weekend by the Happy Hearth Homemaker Club.
